There is a long history of 'Black Paintings' which normally is viewed within the context of some usual connotations - often signalling a dark time within the artists' psyche, (think Rothko and his black/grey series made shortly before his suicide); at times simply to relieve the artist from objective denotation. Bradley though wants black to act as a stage upon which colour can perform, to utilise it in a continued exploration and celebration of colour. Black here will signal not darkness, subtlety or restraint - but a device in order to embrace colour as supreme, all the while continuing to refer to a lineage of abstraction.
